Te Whare Tapa Whā
Te Whare Tapa Whā
Te Whare Tapa Whā is a model we can use to understand health and wellbeing. Think of your life like a whare (house) – or ‘meeting house’ – which has four walls to help it stand tall and strong. Each wall represents an area of your life that contributes to you feeling good! You can use this house to check that all of your walls are being well looked after.
Get to work.
- Create your whare, make it beautiful and bright! Your whare represents you and your wellbeing.
- Name the 5 sides of your whare
- Taha tinana – your physical health (like playing outside or eating yummy kai)
- Taha whānau – your family, and social health (maybe it’s spending time with your parents or having a nice day with your friends!)
- Taha wairua – your spiritual health (your values and traditions – like learning from your grandparents or parents)
- Taha hinengaro – your mental and emotional health (like being with friends, being active and learning new things)
- Whenua – your connection to your land and your roots (this could be where you are from or where you are living)
- Use your whare as a guide to help you stay centered. Write down what you’ve done recently to strengthen your whare. Which wall does it belong to? Write it here!
